is it safe to fire a 25 after it has sat for 25 years without being shot?

CleoCATra asked:

The gun, clip and box of bullet was stored in a plastic grocery bag for the last 25 years and hasn’t been shot. The clip was loaded but NOT IN the gun. Those bullets turned green so I removed them. Is it safe to reload with the bullets from the box (the look like new bullets) and is it safe to target shoot with the gun.????
It hasn’t been cleaned or used in about 26 years.

clean it and make sure it is in optimal working condition. i have a original Thompson smg from WWII and it fires great.

clean it out real good before you use it make sure you oil everything that needs oiled and you should be good to go.

No, you might want to get it serviced because the parts could have sticked together and need to be lubed again.

I would highly recommend you either clean it or have it cleaned. You don’t know what type of corrosion has happened and you definitely don’t want to fire it right away without getting it clean.

It would most definately need to be cleaned, who knows what could have been living in it! Also take it to a local gun/outdoor shop that sells guns and have an expert check it over before trying anything.

its not safe to just load and shoot.

It needs to be taken apart and inspected for rust.

Try the action (slide if it’s an automatic, or the cylinder if it’s a revolver although I’ve never heard of a .25 revolver). If it works smoothly, then it’s probably OK to fire. However, I would first disassemble, clean and lubricate it.

Then it’s time to “let the lead slingin’ begin!”

it is not the gun you worry about. if the ammo is still that old then i would be very careful.if the gun is in good shape then there is nothing to worry about

Cleo, if the gun and magazine are not all rusted, then it is safe to clean and lube the gun and clean the magazine (disassemble it and clean the follower and spring and magazine box with a clean rag or patch) before shooting it. Also, you may have to replace all your bullets, If the box of bullets was stored in a room-temperature dry place, they should be okay. Word of caution: If you pull the trigger and the gun doesn’t sound right when it fires, unload it and make sure you don’t have a bullet lodged in the bore before firing it again. Do this with the action open and the magazine out of your gun. Be sure to eject any shell that may be in the chamber first.

    Good luck.
